Working in Santa Monica
Everything within a couple of miles of the water gets hot-dip galvanised substrate under the powder coat. It costs more up front and roughly doubles the service life here. Inland we do not specify it, and charging for it there would be dishonest.
Salt gets into cut edges, weld seams and fixings first — never the middle of a panel. So the detailing that matters is at the joints: sealed welds, galvanised fasteners, and no untreated steel left where two materials meet.
Stainless fixings are not an upsell here, they are the spec
A hot-dip galvanised gate on plain steel bolts still fails at the bolts near the coast — salt gets into the thread and the bolt head first, well before it touches the galvanised surface either side of it. Every fixing on a Santa Monica job is stainless for exactly that reason, not as an optional upgrade offered at extra cost.
The same logic extends to hinges, latches and any hardware bolted through the coating. A single overlooked plain-steel fastener is enough to start a visible rust streak down an otherwise well-protected panel within a season or two.
How we assess exposure on site, rather than by postcode alone
Distance from the water matters, but so does which direction a property actually faces and whether anything shelters it — two houses a similar distance from the beach can have meaningfully different exposure depending on orientation, elevation and what stands between the property and the onshore wind. We look at the actual site rather than applying a blanket coastal specification purely by zip code.
Where a property sits further inland but still catches direct onshore wind off a canyon or a break in the terrain, we will specify the coastal treatment there too, and skip it on a technically coastal property that happens to be sheltered.
The work here skews toward smaller, denser lots
Santa Monica’s lots run smaller and more built-up than the valley on average, which means front fencing and pedestrian gates come up more often than large driveway gates, and shared or HOA-managed properties are a meaningfully bigger share of the work than in a single-family neighbourhood further inland.
Where a job involves an HOA or a multi-unit building, the approval process runs alongside the coastal specification decisions rather than after them, since both affect the same drawing.
Timeline for coastal work
Coastal-spec jobs run slightly longer in the shop than an equivalent inland job, since galvanising is a separate process step before powder coat rather than a straight prime-and-coat sequence. It typically adds a week or so to fabrication, not to the overall site schedule.
The finished gate more than makes up for it in service life: a coastal specification done properly roughly doubles how long the coating and substrate last against an inland-spec gate exposed to the same salt air.

What Santa Monica changes
- Salt
- Hot-dip galvanised substrate under powder coat as standard. Stainless fixings throughout, because a galvanised gate on plain steel bolts still fails at the bolts.
- Wood
- Ipe and redwood handle marine air well; cedar needs re-coating more often here than inland. We flag the difference at quote.
- Wind
- Onshore wind is constant. Solid leaves get upsized posts and footings, or we move you to a profile that lets air through.
