Working in Woodland Hills
Woodland Hills has the most exposed sites we work on. A solid leaf over 6′ on a ridge is a sail, and the post, footing and operator all get sized to that load rather than to the gate weight alone. Getting it wrong shows up as a gate off its track after two winters.
Lots are large, so boundary runs are long. That is where chain link or ranch rail down the sides with hardwood across the frontage is usually the sensible split rather than premium material all the way round.
Sizing to wind load, not just leaf weight
A solid gate leaf over six feet tall on an exposed ridge behaves like a sail in a way its weight alone does not predict — the wind load on the face of the leaf, not how heavy the material is, is what actually determines post size, footing depth and operator rating on an exposed Woodland Hills site. Undersizing to the leaf weight alone is the single most common reason we get called out to a gate that has torn off its track within two winters of installation elsewhere.
We calculate to the exposed face area on any ridge-line site, and where the wind load genuinely does not work with a solid leaf, we will recommend a semi-privacy profile that lets air through instead of fighting the site with a heavier and heavier structure.
Mixing materials on a long boundary, and why it usually wins
Large lots mean long boundary runs, and pricing an entire perimeter in the same premium hardwood used at the frontage rarely makes sense once the numbers are actually laid out. Hardwood or wrought iron at the street-facing frontage, with chain link or ranch rail continuing around the sides and back where nobody sees it, is the split most Woodland Hills clients land on once they see both quoted side by side.
We quote it that way by default on a long-boundary property rather than pricing one material across the whole run and letting the client discover the split themselves later.
Heat and UV on an exposed site
An exposed ridge gets more direct sun across more of the day than a sheltered valley lot, which shortens the re-coat interval on hardwood and makes dark vinyl a genuine liability rather than a cosmetic preference — the same distortion risk that applies to any west-facing dark panel is worse here simply because there is less shade anywhere along the run to offset it.
We steer dark finishes toward the more sheltered sections of a property here rather than ruling them out entirely, since even an exposed lot usually has at least one run that gets some relief from a tree line or the house itself.
Why solar operators pay for themselves here
Trenching mains power to an operator at the far end of a long driveway is expensive in a way it simply is not on a shorter suburban run, and Woodland Hills’ larger lots make that trenching distance the norm rather than the exception. A solar operator with battery backup avoids that cost entirely and, on an exposed site with reliable sun most of the year, keeps the gate cycling without issue.
We size the solar panel and battery to the gate’s actual cycle count rather than a generic residential average, since a household using the gate a dozen times a day needs meaningfully more capacity than one using it twice.

What Woodland Hills changes
- Wind
- Post, footing and operator sized to wind load, not just leaf weight. Semi-privacy profiles offered where a solid panel is the wrong answer.
- Runs
- Long boundaries. Mixing materials — hardwood at the frontage, mesh or ranch rail elsewhere — usually beats one premium material everywhere.
- Power
- Long driveways make trenching expensive, which is where a solar operator with battery backup genuinely pays for itself.
