Working in Studio City
The hills above Ventura are where stepped panels earn their cost. The ground moves under every bay, and a fence that rakes to follow it wanders visibly against the horizontals of the house behind. Stepping keeps every rail true.
Access is the other constraint: narrow streets, steep driveways and not much room to work. Sections come in finished so the site window stays short.
Engineering a stepped run on a real hillside
Stepping a fence down a slope means each bay’s posts are cut to a different height so the top rail stays level while the bottom of the panel follows the grade in a series of small drops rather than one continuous rake. Get the step increments wrong and the panels either leave a visible gap at the bottom or bury themselves slightly into the slope — both look wrong from the street even though the fence is structurally fine either way.
We survey the actual grade across the run before cutting any posts, rather than working from an assumed uniform slope that hillside lots almost never actually have.
The architecture here is genuinely mixed
Studio City runs from older ranch-style homes to contemporary hillside builds, often on the same street, and the fence material that suits one does not automatically suit the other. A dark stained horizontal slat reads correctly against a modern glass-and-steel house and looks out of place bolted onto a 1960s ranch that would take a picket or board-on-board profile better.
We ask what the house actually looks like before recommending a material, rather than defaulting to whichever profile happens to be trending that year.
Retaining walls and fences are usually one conversation, not two
A hillside lot frequently already has a retaining wall doing structural work the fence does not need to duplicate, and coordinating post placement with that wall — rather than fighting it — is often what makes a stepped run possible at all on a genuinely steep site.
Where there is no retaining wall and the fence itself needs to hold back any grade, that changes the footing design substantially, and we flag it at the site visit rather than after posts are already set.
Timeline given the access constraints
Narrow, steep streets with little room to stage material mean sections come to site pre-finished rather than being built in place, which keeps the actual site window to a few days even on a technically demanding stepped run. Fabrication in the shop is where the real time goes on a Studio City job, not the install.
Parking and street access get planned before the crew shows up, since a hillside street with cars on both sides can be genuinely too narrow for a delivery truck without prior arrangement.

What Studio City changes
- Grade
- Panels step with the slope, rails stay level, downhill posts go deeper. This is the default here, not an upgrade.
- Access
- Steep, narrow streets. Prefabricated sections and a short site window rather than weeks of driveway occupation.
- Drainage
- Hillside runoff sits against post bases in winter. Posts get a drained base so water moves away rather than pooling.
